Todman Stakes

The 2016 Todman Stakes, often still referred to as its previous name the Todman Slipper Trial, is one of the Sydney Turf Club’s leading Group 2 races for two-year-old colts and geldings.

Run over a 1200m sprint distance under set weight conditions, the Group 2 Todman Stakes is conducted at the iconic Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in March during the annual Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

With prize money set at a lucrative $300,000, the Todman Stakes always attracts a quality field of the best male juveniles of the season, the majority of which are heading towards the ultimate two-year-olds race in Australia, the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper.

Each year the Todman Stakes winner gains a ballot exemption for the Golden Slipper and the last Todman Stakes winner to continue on to win the Golden Slipper was Tierce in 1991.

The Todman Stakes is conducted on Rosehill’s Coolmore Stud Classic Day, host to six Group features including the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Classic (1500m) and the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m), as well as the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) which is the two-year-old fillies’ equivalent to the Todman Stakes. The Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) is now also held on the day, as well as the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m).

On the 3rd of November, the Melbourne Cup races off!

Todman Stakes History

First conducted in 1973 when Imagele claimed victory, the Todman Stakes began as a Principal race before being elevated to a Group 3 event in 1980 and following that gained its current Group 2 status in 1986.

In 1975 and 1976 there were two editions of the Todman Stakes held with first and second divisions of the race.

Prior to 2005 the Todman Stakes was known as the Todman Slipper Trial as it is the traditional lead-up race for young colts and geldings looking for a start in the prestigious Golden Slipper.
