The 2011 Todman Slipper Trial Nominations may be short on quantity, but the quality of horses on show is certain to provide for a fantastic race at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Saturday March 19.
The Group 3 event is the main lead up race for colts and geldings on their way to the Group 1 Golden Slipper in a fortnight’s time.
It’s worth $300,000 and gives punters an ideal form guide with the race run over the same distance on the same track as the Golden Slipper.
Sepoy will be the raging hot favourite for this race and is already into a record short $2 price in future’s betting on the Golden Slipper at Luxbet.
His main threat is expected to be Satin Shoe’s but she’s running in the Reisling Slipper Trial, the equivalent of this race for fillies.
Sepoy has earned his favouritism through winning all three legs of the Blue Diamond Stakes series and has never looked like losing any of his career starts.
There was some doubts as to whether Sepoy would line up in the Todman Slipper trial but trainer Peter Snowden was convinced after his track work earlier today.
“He pulled up well although he had a little bit of a blow which was understandable with his first serious piece of work since the Blue Diamond three weeks ago, but I could not be happier with the way he worked this morning.
“He does not seem to get off-stride at all and he is just showing me nothing to say I should not be running him and I think five weeks from the Diamond is too long for a colt who eats as well as he does,” Snowden said.
His biggest challenger in the Todman Slipper is expected to be Foxwedge after a dominant run in the Clarry Conners Plate last start.
Foxwedge is currently at $9.50 in early Golden Slipper betting at Luxbet.
Other surprises could come from Peter Moody’s Golden Archer or the Bart Cummings trained Do You Think.
While Sepoy has been one of the favourites of the Autumn he’s nowhere near as certain as we saw Black Caviar and an upset is a real possibility.
